What is Veterans Day?
When Was the First Veterans Day?
Veterans Day was first observed, November 11, 1919, to commemorate the end of WWI. Exactly a year earlier, on the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month,” world leaders agreed to an armistice, or formal halt to combat, to negotiate terms to end the “Great War.”
For several decades afterward, this date was known as Armistice Day.

When Did Armistice Day Become Veterans Day?
In 1954, following WWII and conflict in Korea, congress changed the name from Armistice Day to Veterans Day.
This action was encouraged by veterans service organizations to acknowledge American veterans of all wars.

When is Veterans Day?
Veterans Day is marked on November 11, regardless of which day the date falls, but this hasn’t always been the case.
In June 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Holiday Bill. The legislation was intended to “encourage travel, recreational and cultural activities” and aid industrial efficiency by celebrating certain holidays on a Monday. The act ensured workers received several three-day weekends each year, coinciding with the celebration of Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day and Columbus Day.
Under the act, Veterans Day was observed October 25, 1971, and on varying days for several years afterward.
However, following the objection of veterans service organizations, Veterans Day observance soon returned to its original date.

What is the Difference Between Memorial Day and Veterans Day?
Memorial Day is a day to remember those who gave their lives in defense of the United States. On Veterans Day, we honor all living and deceased veterans of the American Armed Forces.
Are Banks Closed on Veterans Day?
Veterans Day is a federal holiday, which means that all federal, state and local government offices, courts and post offices are closed. Most banks are closed because they fall under the Federal Reserve.
In addition, many schools and some public libraries may not be open on Veterans Day.
On the other hand, national parks usually remain open and some even offer free or reduced admission on certain federal holidays, including Veterans Day.
Do Other Countries Celebrate Veterans Day?
While we tend to think of Veterans Day as an American holiday, other countries also honor their veterans on November 11, although the name of the holiday can vary.
For instance, Canada, Australia and Great Britain observe Remembrance Day on or near November 11.

How Do We Celebrate Veterans Day?
Communities observe Veterans day in a few different ways, including scheduled parades and wreath-laying ceremonies. Active and past service members often play a role in Veterans Day events, conducting formal flag ceremonies, gun salutes and other organized observances.
Individuals can show support and appreciation for veterans by flying an American flag outside their home or business on Veterans Day.
Common Veterans Day Activities
Citizens can observe Veterans Day by properly displaying an American flag and supporting organizations that aid veterans. This might include visiting veterans in nursing homes and veterans hospitals, compiling care packages for those currently serving overseas, and supporting reputable organizations that serve veterans through donations or volunteer work.
This is also a good time to teach children about veterans’ contributions to our country. Schools may invite veterans to meet with students and talk about military life.
Assisted living and senior care communities also frequently honor resident veterans and others who served in the military.
On Veterans Day or any other day of the year, it’s always appropriate to thank a military veteran for their service.
