On those long, hot midsummer days when the sun is blazing, your backyard swimming pool is your favorite retreat. But as the temperature climbs and the splash count rises, your swimming pool needs a little extra attention to stay clean and ready for a quick dip.

Mid-season is the perfect time for a pool checkup, not just to keep the water crystal clear but to make sure everything is working behind the scenes. Here are a few easy maintenance tips to help your pool stay in shape all summer long.

1. Don’t Skimp on the Skimming

Soggy leaves and floating insects are not a good look for a pool and can make for a cringe-worthy swim. Grab your skimmer and do a quick sweep each day. A few minutes of skimming keeps your pool looking pristine and your swimmers happy.

2. Show Your Filter Some Love

Your filter has been working overtime since Memorial Day. Give it a midsummer refresh! For cartridge filters, hose off built-up grime. If you have a sand or DE filter, it’s time to backwash.

A clean filter means better water circulation and fewer murky surprises.

3. Keep Chemistry in Check

Heat waves, sudden storms and a busy pool can throw your water chemistry off balance, so regular testing is key. Check chlorine and pH levels at least a couple of times a week, or more often if the pool has received heavy use.

  • Ideal pH level: 7.4-7.6

  • Ideal chlorine level: 1-3 ppm

Using a reliable test kit makes it easy to keep everything in balance. When water chemistry is just right, it’s safer, clearer and more enjoyable for everyone.

4. Don’t Forget the Pool Cover

Even in the heat of summer, a pool cover comes in handy. It helps conserve water, reduces chemical use and keeps debris out when your pool’s not in use. Just remember to clear dirt or rainwater off the cover before pulling it back.

6. Shock It Like You Mean It

Even if your pool looks clean, invisible contaminants from sunscreen, sweat and heavy use can build up over time. That’s where shocking your pool comes in.

A shock treatment gives your chlorine a boost, destroying bacteria and organic matter that regular chlorination can’t handle.

  • Shock your pool every one to two weeks, or after heavy use or a big storm.

  • Add pool shock in the evening so the sun doesn’t burn off the chlorine too quickly.

  • Let the pump run overnight for best results.

Regular shocking keeps your pool water sparkling and your swimmers safe.

7. Watch for Algae

If your pool starts looking a little cloudy or develops a greenish tint, you might have an algae bloom brewing.

To prevent algae from taking hold:

  • Maintain proper chlorine levels.

  • Brush the pool walls and floor weekly.

  • Run the pump regularly to circulate water.

If algae does show up, act fast with an algaecide and shock treatment. Left untreated, algae can clog filters, stain surfaces and make your pool slippery – and nobody wants that!

8. Pool Party Prep

Summer is peak time for pool parties! A little prep work ensures your pool party goes off without a hitch.

Here’s how to get your pool ready for guests:

  • Clean and Balance: Shock your pool 24 hours in advance and double-check the pH. A clean, clear pool is always the star of the show.

  • Skim Before Guests Arrive: A last-minute sweep clears out stray leaves and floating debris.

  • Add Floats and Fun: Colorful inflatable pool floats, pool games and beach balls instantly up the fun factor.

  • Light It Up: Pool-safe and floating LED lights set the mood for evening events.

  • Safety First: Make sure ladders are secure, gates are latched and safety equipment is accessible.

  • Tidy the Deck: Arrange towels, set out sunscreen and stash pool chemicals safely out of sight.

Bonus points for themed decorations, party lights and a drink station to keep everyone cool and hydrated!

Taking a few moments each week to check in on your pool means more time floating, splashing and enjoying the best part of summer. With just a little mid-season maintenance, your backyard oasis will be clear, clean and cannonball-ready until the last swim of the summer.
