History of the Pickle in a Jar Ornament Tradition

The Pickle in a Jar Ornament - History and Tradition

Among many other things that we sell here is the famous German pickle ornament. This is the continuation of a long held German Christmas tradition, passed down among families both in the Old World, and brought here to the Americas long ago. A fun game for kids and a memory for adults, the history is a simple one.

The tradition would be, on Christmas Eve, for the parents of the family to hang a last, pickle ornament long after everything else was in place and the children were asleep. The next day, the children would search for it. The child who found it would receive an extra gift from St. Nicholas, while the first adult who noticed it would be said to have good luck all year round. This is known as Die Weihnachtsgurke in German. Our own versions of the ornament often come with a second ornament, a “jar” for the pickle to rest in when not hidden. So why not take this wonderful little tradition and make it something for your own home today?
