Origin of Christmas Trees
The modern Christmas tree tradition began more recently than most people realize. Although throughout history, there have been many examples of decorating trees and plants, for Christmas and other holidays, the current tradition began in the mid-18th century.
The country where the popular tradition began is generally agreed to be Germany. Starting as a communal setting, they slowly became more popular in individual homes. They were viewed as a pastoral decoration, part of the culture’s charm. They slowly spread from country to country through a variety of means: popularity among the nobility, emigration, trade, and others.
There is disagreement as to the first US tree, but it generally is dated anywhere from 1777-1847. Although natural trees were the norm for decades, artificial trees began to appear in the early 1900s, and soon took precedent. Ranging from aluminum to brush bristles to the current plastic and molded trees, there has been a constant enhancement. So join the tradition today.
