Christmas Icicle Lights

Christmas Icicle Lights

Icicle lights are a specific decoration used for houses. Their most common role is to be hung along the edge of a roof.

Icicle lights consist of a series of light strings connected to a center cord. Usually only a few inches apart, the strings, or drops, hang down anywhere from 5-30 inches each. There usually is a staggered length that changes from drop to drop to prevent the system from looking too uniform. When hung along an edge, the lights drape down over the side like a series of lit icicles, thus explaining their name.

While icicle lights are a ready-made alternative to simply outlining the contours of your house, there are some features that it would be wise to note. Icicle lights are, by their nature, relatively short strings. The lights hang vertically but are placed horizontally, so a large number of lights take up a short distance. The average house will need several strings to be completely encircled. As they hang free, they can be affected more severely by wind than average lights. There is less variety as well. A wide majority of icicle lights are mini bulbs, incandescent or LED, so the differences will only be in drop length and coloration.

Despite this, icicles are very popular, as they represent a simple, but effective, form of decoration. If you want to try something new with lighting, but aren’t confident enough to try a more complex project just yet, perhaps icicle lights will give you the change in style that you have been longing for.
