Bubble lights were first manufactured by the Telsen Electric Company Ltd(1935), in Manchester, England. In 1946 Noma introduced this style of light in Christmas Lights. At the time Noma was one of the largest manufacturers of Christmas Lights in the United States. Since then many companies have manufactured this timeless style Christmas Lights.
A bubble light is a decorative style Christmas light that contains a
liquid-filled vial that is heated and lighted by an incandescent light bulb.
Because of the liquid's low boiling point, the modest heat generated by the lamp
causes the liquid to boil and bubble up from the vial's base. The liquid inside
of the vial is typically methylene chloride. Early style bubble lights used a
kind of lightweight oil inside the vial. The light from the lamp illuminates the
bubbles from underneath, causing them to shine. As Christmas lights, bubble
lights were very popular during the 1950s through the 70's. Since then, they
have become a popular style Christmas lights, as people remember them from their
childhood.
Sometimes when the bubbles are not flowing in the Bubble ligths, the tubes need
to be tapped or even shaken to begin bubbling after warming up.
Since the 1950's bubble lights have become more elaborate in appearance. Glitter
has bee added to the vials for extra sparkle and these lights have also been
turned into Bubble night lights. Bases are now often made to look like objects
such as Santas or snowmen, rather than the plain ribbed plastic. Bubble lights
can now be found in all holidays espcecially Easter, Thanksgiving, St. Patricks
Day and especially Halloween.
